Tour name
Clean diving tour of Lake Shikotsu, a national park with top-class water qualityTour overview
Lake Shikotsu, a national park that has been ranked number one in water quality many times (Ministry of the Environment Lake Water Quality Survey), is surprisingly littered when diving underwater. With the cooperation of the Ministry of the Environment’s Lake Shikotsu Office and the Lake Shikotsu Management Council, this plan involves diving in spots that are usually difficult to get to and observing the underwater environment while carrying out cleanup activities. It is a project that does not just pick up trash, but also uses GIS (geographic information system) to digitize the trash accumulation points on Google Maps and clarify the points where trash is likely to accumulate, thereby connecting it to the next generation. We meet in the morning, discuss the diving points, and dive at different points in the morning and afternoon. After the tour, we sort the trash and enter the data into the GIS, and there is also a ceremony to present a letter of appreciation from the Lake Shikotsu Management Council and a commemorative photo session. You can also leave your name on the GIS Google Maps. As a tourist destination, this plan is intended to be passed down to future generations in order to prevent ghost fishing (water birds that have died after becoming tangled in residual fishing lines in the water) and other problems as a tourist destination.Lake Shikotsu National Park has restrictions on motorized boats, so motorized boats cannot be used freely, but we were given special permission as this is a nature conservation plan.
In advance, participants will be shown an English video about the lake bottom cleanup activities carried out by Ocean Days, which will give them a deeper understanding of why clean diving is necessary, and we will then work together on this sustainable tour.
